The bullring was built as a venue for popular festivities and bullfights, integrated into the municipality’s festive calendar.
As with many Mallorcan bullrings, its activity has been linked to patron saint festivals, becoming a meeting point for residents and visitors. Over time, it has experienced different periods of greater or lesser activity, adapting to regulatory and social changes.
Today, it continues to be a bullfighting landmark within the municipality of Muro.
Among the most notable aspects of the Muro Bullring are:
The bullring maintains a typical bullfighting arena structure, with stands that allow good visibility of the ring.
The Muro Bullring features traditional circular architecture, with a central ring and perimeter seating that ensures good visibility from the stands. Its design follows the classic functional bullfighting arena model, designed to host events linked to local celebrations.
It is a practical venue with dimensions appropriate to the municipality, integrated into Muro’s urban environment. Rather than a monumental bullring, it stands out for its popular roots and its role as a gathering place during bullfighting events.
Bullfighting events in Muro are usually held mainly during the summer months, coinciding with the municipality’s patron saint festivals.
The program is usually announced with limited advance notice, so it is advisable to check for updated information each season.
The name “La Monumental” refers both to its historic character and its architectural uniqueness. The bullring was built by utilizing the cavity of an old quarry, excavating the rock to give it a circular shape. The pens, stables and infirmary are carved directly into the stone, making it a unique arena in Spain.
Construction of La Monumental began around 1911, promoted by local enthusiast Jaime Serra Palau, and was completed in 1918. Since then it has been the uninterrupted stage for Muro’s bullfighting tradition, with the exception of a period of inactivity between 2017 and 2025.
Yes. The Muro Bullring is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), both by the Ministry of Culture and by the autonomous authorities of the Balearic Islands. It is one of the bullfighting venues with the highest heritage protection in the Balearic Islands.
It is located at Carrer de Cervantes, 11, in Muro (07440), Illes Balears. The municipality of Muro is situated in the central Mallorcan plain, about 40 km from Palma via the Ma-13A road, and very close to the Albufera de Mallorca and the coastal municipalities of Can Picafort and Alcúdia.
The main event in Muro is held in June, on the occasion of the patron saint festivals of San Juan Bautista. Following the return of bullfighting to the municipality in September 2025—after eight years of inactivity—the intention of the management company Balears Cambio de Tercio is to expand the annual bullfighting program. Check the events calendar on this website to stay up to date.
The bullring has an approximate capacity of 4,800 seats and has all the regulatory facilities: horse patio, infirmary, corrals and pens. In addition to bullfighting events, the venue can host concerts, sporting events and cultural shows.
Yes, although it is a very exceptional occurrence. Throughout its entire history, only one bull has been granted a pardon at La Monumental, in recognition of its extraordinary bravery during all phases of the fight. A fact that speaks to Muro’s bullfighting standards and rigor.
